Giving

We have all heard the saying "To give is more important than to receive". Most of us have been told from childhood about the importance of sharing, of giving to others of our abundance in life whether it is in the form of physical items, money or of our time and energy. In our churches we are asked to tithe of our finances. Many organizations desire us to volunteer to help in their work. We can help at the schools or with sports activities and civic or political organizations. We give to our family and friends perhaps being devoted to our children desiring to meet their every need.

Believing in the importance of giving is a beautiful and honorable exercise that can be sorely lacking with many in our society. For if most of us were less selfish and more giving our world might be a more loving, peaceful and compassionate place.

However, might we also ask where my desire to give coming from is? Do I feel I should give to the church, do I feel guilty if I don’t give to that charity or help with the soccer team.

Do we remember when we are flying in an airline the stewardess reminds us in case of an emergency to put the oxygen mask on our face first before we put it on our child.

Are we in touch with how important it is for us to have taken care of ourselves so we have extra to share? Do we feel abundant are we overflowing such that when we give it comes through us not draining our being. Have we cleared out enough of our egos, let go of all our should’s and. shouldn’t Such that our giving comes not with expectations conditions or leads to us resenting our sacrifice.

In the Kabbalah they speak of opening ourselves to receive more light for the sake of sharing. If first we don’t feel worthy enough to receive the light or chose to stay closed to receiving we have little of this divine light and love to give in service.

It really begins with us first being able to receive and to feel worthy of receiving; receiving the abundance of the universe.

Let us recognize our divine nature knowing we have all need in this world and as we open to this infinite abundance we will be taking care of our needs and have an overflow to share. Our giving can become unconditional and a natural part of our beingness.
