Who Are We Really?
Dr. Vil-Am Ben A‘Him, Co-director of YAHWEH Academy of Light
Who are we really? Why are we here? What is here? What comes after here? All rather deep universal confusing and perhaps unanswerable questions. Philosophers and scholars have for centuries tried to answer these questions. Religions have through their particular dogma told us they had the answers if we would just follow them. If we did just what they said in our lives we would have a reward after we leave here.
There seems to be a need in man throughout history to believe in something more, something beyond, and something better than this life in this place. Is there a place where we can find eternal peace or rest? Is it called Valhalla, Heaven or Paradise ? Where is this place? Is it up in the clouds? Or on earth perhaps in the Himalayas, Jerusalem , or Mecca ?
Thich Nhat Hanh, the great Buddhist teacher states,
"Buddhists and Christians know the nirvana, or the Kingdom of God, is within their hearts. The Gospels speak of the Kingdom of God as a mustard seed planted in the soil of consciousness. Buddhist sutras speak of Buddha nature as the seed of enlightenment that is already in every one's consciousness."
Most of us have such a strong identification with our personality or our sense of who we think we are. We feel it to be incredibly precious, something we must protect as if there we are only that. If we would let go of that identity we would cease to exist or we have a fear of death and a need to believe in something after life here.
As Eckhart Tolle puts it in Stillness Speaks
"It seems unimaginable and frightening that "I" could cease to exist. But you confuse that precious "I" with your name and form and a story associated with it. That is no more than a temporary formation in the field of consciousness. As long as that form identity is all you know, you are not aware that this preciousness is your own essence, your innermost sense of I Am, which is consciousness itself. It is the eternal you – and that’s the only thing you cannot lose."
So is Eternal life closer than some far off future place or a story we have been given to pacify our fears in this life? Are we being asked to go deeper within to move through our fears and beyond our concepts and limitations of form and realize that all we desire lies within? Can we entertain the thought that as we remove the veils created by memories of the past and release our concerns of the future we can open the door to the eternal consciousness of eternal peace—here and NOW.
The eternal now is all that exists. All that is or ever was exists in that now. There is no time, no future, no past only the entire Universe contained in this moment--all within you.
